Should EU member states help each other? How the national context shapes individual preferences for European solidarity

Abstract With the outbreak of Eurozone crisis, idea providing cross-national financial transfers to countries in economic and difficulties has exacerbated political divide between EU member states with strong macroeconomic performances, which were only weakly hit by periphery that struggled a harsh downturn. This paper aims explain factors drive public support for solidarity within across countries. We argue national context citizens live affects their preferences help other European countries, moderates role played subjective egotropic sociotropic concerns, ideological predispositions, Eurosceptic vote choices shaping solidarity. Using original REScEU 2016 survey, we find motivations provide limited contribution explaining solidarity, almost crisis. On contrary, left–right positions, especially choices, strongly polarize assistance, both voters from parties more(less) likely strongly(weakly)
